The "Real Italian" sandwich is a ham & cheese plus veggies , oil/vinegar. And gave me 2 slices of ham. It was dinky. Don't think I will be returning. Also, their personal pizza is almost $10. I expected better.
Update, 2026, still serving on dry, tough rolls. Nothing at all like an authentic Maine Italian. Super sad. Disappointing. Ordered an Amatos Italian, and it was served on a tough roll. These Italians are always served on much better, very delicious softer bread. It tasted nothing like it should and was just an average, very chewy and dry sandwich. As someone who was raised in Portland, Maine, it was a very sad lunch.
I came in 10 mins before they closed the guy was playing on his phone at the register and told me that he was closed already.
My ex-wife grew up getting Amato's in Maine. We were both excited to see one in Massachusetts. The first couple of visits the subs were great. The last 3 visits they were horrible. Went last week and ordered 2 subs. There were no other customers. I paid extra for toppings. Both subs were marked properly, however the subs inside the paper weren't even close to what we ordered. I am a frequent customer of this location, eat 2-3 days a week. used to love eating amato's as a kid best place to go to relive my childhood. Do have a problem with the young guy that works there twice now whenever he has had to make my sandwiches he has messed up. Refuse to order through doordash anymore and will only go in the store and order so I can watch him make my sandwiches.
