We had a great experience with Altman + Cherny . They have a great selection of Opals and are very unique and exquisite. But the most impressive for us was Matthew, who helped my wife decide what is good for what she was looking for. His knowledge of the stones and what type would make her be satisfied and boy, he couldn’t be more correct. My wife was more than satisfied with what she bought!

We were so glad we visited this shop on our Odyssey tour! The owner gave us a lovely presentation and discussed her family history in the opal business. Their opals are other-wordly and priced to match. They carry a large quantity of different quality gems in each price category. Love their business practice: the miners set their own prices.
I was first drawn to the history of this business, which originated in two young men from war-torn Europe reaching the decision to become dealers in Australia's iconic gemstone. The shop itself is quite magnificent, ideally located by Circular Quay, so easy to access from a CBD hotel, the ferry or a newly arrived cruise ship. Fiona was so knowledgeable about opals. I had done some research prior to shopping but nothing compares to her. There is nothing like the Lighting Ridge Crystal Black Opal anywhere in the U.S. that I have seen. A wonderful buying experience for my new family heirloom! Thank you!
