A Nawlins tradition – The only thing about ACME that stinks is that it is so popular that it is always CROWDED to the max. The fried stuff on the menu is good, but the real reason to go is for the raw oysters. When in New Orleans, we like to hit ACME as soon as we get in town for a couple of dozen on the half shell and a pitcher of Abita amber. I recommend sitting at the bar as opposed to a table. The shuckers can be very entertaining at times.
do you like it raw? – the best jukebox in the quarter. great oysters, shrimp boil, crayfish......you can spend a whole day sucking them heads and pullin' them tails. drink bear by the quart and leave full of food, liquid and joy. what a fun place. don't miss this new orleans institution...this is the real thing.
Perfect Oysters – The single best inexpensive restaurant in the United States. My third favorite restaurant in the Big Easy, where I lived for twelve years.
Don't miss it! – A must everytime we come to the Big Easy! A timeless classic.
Friendly! – Everyone there seems to always be in a good mood. From the shuckers and dishwashers to the management. They are always very friendly. Good food and sweet service.
IN SEARCH OF AN OYSTER LOAF – Anybody who has read The Tummy Trilogy -- Calvin Trillen's ode to food with an emphasis on New Orleans, will no doubt head straight to Acme for an Oyster Loaf upon arriving in the Crescent City. Unfortunately, they seem to have long ago given up on subtlety in favor of quantity, and like so many places in New Orleans, traded in their soup ladle for a slop shovel.
A madhouse – Acme was packed on the afternoon we went. The dozen oysters for $6.50 were delicious. The po'boys were good. Try the cole slaw. This place is for those who like loud places (we sat right behind a table with 15 young men who were very, very loud) and while the waitress did her best, it was catch-as-catch can.
Oh, the oysters – I learned to love oysters here. Came in, thinking I might be able to stomach one or two. But after a week in New Orleans and several visits to the Acme, I was thirsting for my own dozen. Here, the oysters are shucked at the bar. Nothing is pretentious or fancy -- nd the prices are incredible.
