I had arranged to meet my daughter at Abraco. I went in to check the place out when a barista scolded me for not “checking in” They did so in a really nasty annoyed tone and adding insult to injury he was wearing a Boston Red Sox hat proving beyond any doubt that Boston Sucks
In my coffee snob opinion, the two best espressos in the NYC area are Abraco and Sey in Brooklyn. Add to that the great atmosphere/music curation, numerous friendly regulars of truly all ages, and location in E. Village, and this is my very favorite cafe. If you're in the mood to make new friends, you can definitely do it at the espresso bar or communal tables, but certainly there's no pressure to do so. First timer, stopped in for a coffee and a cookie. Asked one of the staff where I could find a trash can because I finished the cookie while waiting for the coffee (before we could make it out of the door) and she responded by rudely and passive aggressively lecturing us on the difference between ordering in and asking for something to go. It’s a shame she had such a shitty attitude because the cookie was great and the vibes in there (other than having to tiptoe around moody staff and rush in and out) were cute.
