One of the reasons radiant heating systems are so energy efficient is that they minimize roof heat losses. Since the heat is kept at floor levels, the temperatures at the ceiling level remain substantially cooler, meaning there's less heat to leak.

One of the biggest ways to save energy in your home is to install a programmable thermostat on your heating system. You may not remember to turn down the heat at night, but your thermostat will. Small changes can add up to big bucks at the end of the year.

You can help maintain your heating system by checking for air leaks from cracks and holes in your ductwork. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that good air duct maintenance, and insulating ducts that pass through cold areas of your home like the garage or basement, could increase the amount of warm air exiting your registers by 60 percent.

If you're curious about how your neighbors heat their houses, more than half the homes in the U.S. are heated with natural gas. Electricity is next at around 30 percent, and then fuel oil at 7 percent. Nine percent of homes use other methods like geothermal heating, and 1 percent of U.S. households use no conventional heating at all.

One of the most common types of heaters used in most homes nowadays is the force-air, or whole-house, system. Here, gas, oil, or electricity is used to heat air, which is blown with a fan around the house via ducts that lead to vents on the floor or ceiling.

Radiant heating is an increasingly popular heating system that involves the use of cables or heated water in pipes, which are run under a non-carpeted floor, within walls, and even under the driveway.

Try these inexpensive steps to save on your winter heating bill: Place weather stripping on your doors and windows. Put insulating cellophane on any single pane windows in your home. Flip your ceiling fan blades to coax heated air down into your room.
