RecommendedThe tremendous variety in fabrics and beads - it has a very uplifting feel to it. The proprietor is helpful and interesting to talk to. I strongly recommend this store for anyone having an interest in Indian spirituality, culture and fabrics.
I LOVE this store. I especially love knowing that all of the artisans are being paid a fair wage for their work, and it’s so fun to see all of the behind the scenes travel on Instagram too. There are so many things here that you can’t find anywhere else (unless you actually go to India or Nepal, etc. of course). And the shop owner is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.
Renee Garland is your typical, exploitative, wealthy, white business owner. She buys beautiful, handmade crafts overseas for cheap, and hawks them stateside so she can live more comfortably than most. While "working hard" on her endless buying trips (aka vacations,) she inevitably needs someone to run her stores. These ppl are typically underpaid, overworked, and in my case, when I was employed through her, duped into signing 1099's, which is, in fact, illegal. I first visited Waterlily while in Maine in 2007, anticipating our move to Portland. What a delightful place, full of reminders of my own cultural heritage. Renee really lives her purpose in this conscious trade shop, and I agree with others that I have found some of the best gifts (for myself, too) here. I just purchased a work satchel that i know I'll use forever, and the scarves and kantha quilts are amazing, too. Highly recommended!

I love everything home at Waterlily. The aesthetics are a beautiful gathering from different countries and feels very contemporary. Great place to shop for yourself and others!!
