Built in 1950 to honor veterans—including Fort Lauderdale native Alexander “Sandy” Nininger (October 20, 1918 – January 12, 1942), a West Point graduate from the Class of 1941. Nininger was a Second Lieutenant in the US Army assigned to lead a unit of the Philippine Scouts.
