I had an image of mine stolen from the internet by a company. They a well-known legal firm in NYC helped me via pro-bono to settle out of court. I've had art work stolen in the past and got no help at all.......this was a very long time ago,and I was young. I will forever remember the attorneys who helped me.I appreciated them so much!!!

I kind of know there is a process to locating Pro-Bono legal council and I endured months of phone calls and a slow gradual eventuality with a firm in New York. However the Lawyer changed firms in the middle of my research process without notifying me and then made no effort to continue my "case" with his new firm. I am back to square one. When I notified the VLA. I was told I would be fast-tracked to another lawyer.. It has been 2 months. I am extremely disappointed with their service so far.

Today our case was settled and we have money to deposit back into the art. With the help of the counsel that took up our case from VLA we were victorious. A thousand thank yous!

I got great support from the staff at Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and help from an awesome Lawyer from a top law firm in NY. He helped me to create two contracts and get the support I needed to protect my art and navigate the legal art world. I highly recommend working with them to any artist. It's tough starting out and they make it a whole lot easier. Getting educated and being protective about this stuff early is the smart thing to do.

Honestly, my experience was very disappointing in hindsight. I had a conflict over material I spent nearly a year working on for a metal record. Like most maligned creatives, I was more interested in the principle of justice than in remuneration. I feel like their insistence to move things into mediation, which makes their mediators a nice little chunk, is kind of a racket. No one was kind enough to advise me of other viable options, like having me tracks removed from the record. If you are treated unfairly, I suggest going ... read more
