Great modern medical facility. That is the extent of positive things. My spouse has cancer and my take away is that overall it was a cattle farm. The color coded number system, the broken set thermostat, along with the lack there of communication for any delay. The worst part was the doctor was going a mile a minute and getting a pastor to speak to took 30 minutes. We've had 2 visits to the facility and other patients were more consoling than the staff.

My step dad had stage 4 lung cancer 4 years back and he was treated at Hillman Cancer Center by Dr. Leavy where their treatment plan and expertise worked amazingl. To our great surprise and even the doctors, they were able to get all of the cancer during surgery. 3 years in remission! My father is currently being cared for at Hillman Cancer Center by Dr. Stephanie Kim consulting with specialist Dr. Farah for a rare Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. UPMC is ALWAYS trying to force me to go downtown to the overcrowded Mercy and Magee Hospitals, which are terrible. Why would people who live in North Allegheny have any interest in going to Oakland for an appointment or treatment? Good luck with calling and trying to talk to or get an appointment with your doctor. Most appointments are done by the assistants (I have no idea how this is legally acceptable) and you are still charged as much as meeting with a specialist. Calling is a nightmare. I am disappointed with the experiences I have had at the Cancer Institute. The staff is very nice, however, all three of my visits-which were checkups took almost 2 1/2 hours - waiting in the waiting room and also in the exam room. I am a patient person, but all three visits were like this and I had morning appointments. In addition, my physician did not have my blood results on his chart and told me that his staff should have been calling me if my counts were stable, so my steroid could be reduced.
