Guns and baseball are two completely different topics, right? Sort of. Did you know the two went together in the early years of the game? According to “The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball,” early umpires in the late 19th and early 20th centuries carried guns for their protection. But in 1909, a Chicago judge ruled that umpires had no right to draw a gun, even when faced with a mob. And you thought Lt. Frank Drebin (portrayed by Leslie Nielsen) in “The Naked Gun” was the only umpire that carried a gun.
