I brought in my 6-year-old iPad since the screen got really cracked and messed up. I didn't get his name, but the person at the counter pointed out that even if they replaced the screen, my iPad is bent so it wouldn't be usable for drawing with an Apple Pencil (which is the main use). He said I could get a refurbished iPad for a similar price to the repair cost. He even recommended me a site to get it from!
