We have done some other mining at Coleman's and Miller mountain and this place by far blows every place out of the water! You take an unpaved road for a couple miles up to the top of the mountain and you are met by the sweetest and most helpful couple at the top. The spaces to mine are huge and constantly excavated from the looks of it - like the soil is constantly moving. Every few steps I'd find another beautiful piece. We traveled from Maryland to mine for diamonds. After very little luck mining for diamonds, we decided to try our luck with crystals. This place was amazing! Our GPS took us through the national forest which was nail biting to say the least, but we made it. The sweet lady working on the day we went was so helpful. She walked my boys over to some areas where she knew they would find big crystals, and they did. They also got to climb a little bit on some of the rocks and overall had a fantastic time. This was the best and most productive quartz mine we visited while in Mt. Ida. The mine was large with lots of tailings and an open cliff face that was accessible with quartz seams. We visited with my grandson and the staff was especially helpful and encouraging to him - showing him what to look for and offering him free specimens that she found. I’ve been a rock collector for decades and would definitely visit this site again. Highly recommended!
