You almost never need a lawyer when things are going well, it's usually when something awful has happened, in my case it was an unfair termination from a job I'd really loved and dedicated myself to. It was wonderful to have an advocate that was so caring and had such knowledge and integrity going to bat for me at such a vulnerable time.
