I spent about 4 months volunteering at Dogwood once a week to gain some experience with animal-assisted therapy. I hope to be able to incorporate it in my practice as a mental health counselor eventually. It was an absolutely amazing experience, Melissa and Ron Winkle are such welcoming and knowledgeable people. They always have something engaging and therapeutic for clients to do. Melissa has devoted countless hours of time, energy, and love to create a fun and supportive place where individuals can learn and grow, whether they are an OT client improving their skills to participate in daily life, or as a student learning about OT, animal assisted therapy, and assistance dogs. Melissa and her canine co-therapists have made such a difference in so many lives. There is no other place like Dogwood!
Melissa provides truly invaluable information during her training workshops. I learned so much about animal assisted therapy, creative problem solving, and animal welfare. I highly recommend attending if you are interested in incorporating animals into your practice.
Dogwood's Summer Camp is the perfect place for kids who love animals and need a little help with self regulation and managing sensory issues. The staff is kind, knowledgeable, innovative and consistent. I'm thrilled with the experience my kids have had at Dogwood! Highly Recommend.
