Fantastic hidden gem, downstairs of the hotel, that’s absolutely worth experiencing. Thursday’s special was fried chicken, but I went with the meatloaf—and it did not disappoint. If the fried chicken is anywhere near as good as the meatloaf, you’re in for a treat. The onion rings were outstanding—perfectly cooked with a light, crispy batter. Easily some of the best my wife and I have ever had.
If you are passing through or living near Wilson, you absolute must stop by the Sample Room. The food here is pure comfort. The pierogis are absolutely great—perfectly cooked and packed with flavor—and the mac and cheese is rich, creamy, and a total standout. Check your credit cards! My wife and I were there on 5/26/26 and we had some very poor service from our waitress. A long time to come take our order, onion ring app (recommended by the owner) came after our meals, had to walk up to the bar to request drink refills because the waitress was absent. Also, creme brulee was delivered without berries and I had to stand at the bar to get attention and ask - She eventually brought them, but we were done with the dessert by then. Only two waitstaff in restaurant to take orders, bus tables, bartend, run orders and serve. This makes service painfully slow. The two ladies working that night were doing the best they could. You would think small town Kansas restaurant would have a top-notch steak. Not the case here. Your steak doesn’t have marbling, or a fat on the side, but lots of gristle.
