Took a 3 hour self guided canoe up Lake Saxapahaw from the damn in late Fall. My wife and I had the entire 4 mile stretch upriver mostly to ourselves. Couldn't have asked for a more relaxing paddle. Highly recommended - this stretch is perfect for families and older couples. There's little to no current and very few obstructions. While the depth varies from 2 to 5 feet or so, it's really more of a lake as the width is much wider than an average river. Remember to stay away from the lip of the damn and you're fine.
