I’m not a rock climber, so I can’t address those concerns. I just like to camp there in my van, overnight, when I’m driving long stretches on Rt 60. It’s quiet, beautiful, has restrooms, and mostly level parking. You don’t have to get too far back (on dirt or gravel roads) to get completely away from the road noise. There are multiple BLM dispersed camping areas further back in the hills.

It was pretty hot when I stopped so I only hiked out a bit. It's an interesting canyon and looks like a few caves. I would love to spend a whole day here to explore.

I've only done some hiking here, there are a few different trails. What i really like to do however is disperse camp and explore the backroads on my motorcycle. Lot of mines in the area but it can be dangerous around them with sink hole chimney's.

The Box recreation area is about ten miles west of Socorro on your left. There is a large Forest Service sign with the words "The Box." I turned onto to the gravel road and set up my tent in the shade beside a large junipe... read more
