Maintaining its headquarters in LaFayette, Ala., Tallapoosa River Electric Cooperative is an electric distribution cooperative serving parts of Clay, Randolph, Tallapoosa, Chambers, Lee, Russell, and Barbour Counties of the state. TREC provides electricity, free energy audits, free residential power quality audits, and free heating/ventilation and air conditioning design to its members. Established in 1939, TREC, along with other electrical cooperatives, is a member of the Alabama Rural Electric Association.

I have been living in a small trailer and have been forced to use TRE for the past four years. My electric bill has always been very high, at least 125.00 monthly even though I live in a small trailer. It has continued to increase over the past four years and recently has been as high as $350.00 for one month. A gust of wind that only lasted 3 minutes caused a power outage. It has been over an hour and power still has not been restored. A rumble of thunder, a quick heavy downpour, and literally three minutes of a gust of wind and the power is out! Pretty pathetic! I still do hear any signs of service trucks in my area!
First of all, you have to pay to be a "member" of their co-op before you can get power through them. Where I live, this is the only company to get power from. You pay a deposit, which they take out of the first bill. We just received our bill for a total of 10 days, and the bill was almost $100. We use all energy-efficient appliances, don't use much energy (even the employee that spoke to us about our issue with our bill told us that); yet, somehow we have a nearly $100 bill for only 10 days of usage. In my area the electric power delivered by them is highly unreliable. If I were purchasing a house that was serviced by this Co-Op I would certainly think twice. They do not even keep accurate statistics of outages. Surges which appear to be caused by them are ignored and if you purchase in the area, make sure all your appliances have extened warrantees.
