Sunland Topsoils was started in 1974 by David Hay and his stepson Ed Little. They began creating topsoils using peat from a source on Whidbey Island and sandy loam from a pit up the hill from their location on Reservation Road. Beginning with one small dump truck and one rubber-tired loader, they gradually expanded their vision to include not only manufacturing a variety of soils, but the recycling of wood waste materials to be sold as soil amendments.
