I needed to replace one of a pair of gas struts on my pool pump enclosures lid. One of the old ones leaked and the other one was overloaded as a result. The original old black/chrome struts always struggled to lift/shut smoothly. Over a couple of emails and phone calls, Ian worked out that the best way to go was with a fully stainless steel set up due to the corrosive position in the enclosure and to increase the diameter of the struts to deal with the (heavy) metal lid.
