After a bad fall, I broke my clavicle bone. The first surgeon I saw strongly suggested I leave it alone and let it heal on its own and left the room without further discussion. After 3 weeks for pain and minimal movement, I went to see Dr. Alter for a second opinion. He also agreed that it would heal eventually in about 9 months and I would have some bump at the break site as it was quite separated. Dr Alter treated my amputated fingertips after an accident. He started working on my fingers in ER, and reassured me that it will be OK. I asked a physical therapist friend of mine before I continued my treatment, and she recommended Dr Alter. He is very competent, caring and attentive. He supported my decision to get a second opinion. Dr I saw for second opinion concurred with Dr Alter's treatment. This doctor is completely incompetent! He is lucky my father hasn't sued him for a misdiagnosis of a cancerous tumor on his index finger. He nearly lost his hand! Fortunately for us, we went to Boston to see Dr. Cassidy who amputated the finger but saved his hand.
I would not recommend Dr. Alter to anyone. I went to him for a broken wrist a couple of years ago. He was very dismissive (bordering on rude) when I asked for details on my condition/treatment. Seemed very insecure as if my wanting information about MY health was questioning his competence. Because I have HMO insurance and my group uses his practice, I stayed with him even though I didn't really feel comfortable with him. The end result of my treatment was not great.
