The importance of having a trusted mechanic - Last week my trunk wasn't closing properly, the latch would close, but the motor wouldn't pull it in all the way, so my car sensed the trunk wasn't fully closed and would beep, and flash the four-ways. I’m sharing my experience so others can make an informed decision. I brought my Mini Countryman in for what should have been a straightforward thermostat replacement. Unfortunately, things went very wrong afterward. The work on my car was done by a junior mechanic, and based on what I was later told by another shop, a hose clamp was not installed on the main coolant hose. Took my 2005 Xterra in to have the steering rack replaced. Ivan refused the job without even looking at the truck. Said he didn’t want to “get stuck” if something broke because of age. I understand older trucks can be tougher to work on, but if a shop with the right equipment isn’t willing to work on cars - what’s the point?! A mechanic’s role is to assess the vehicle, explain the risks, and either provide a plan or at least look at the job before turning it down.
