Massage is a beautiful profession, and I believe fully in its power to heal. I attended Spectrum Center School of Massage in Lake Stevens and graduated from the program. This school is better suited for students who want to learn the skills needed to work in a massage business, rather than for those who hope to become business owners or managers. My first day of massage school was a hopeful and disappointing day. I’m not sure if I met my student clinic massage teacher on the first or second day, either way I was let down by her response to my humorous demeanor. I worked at Safeway, their floor mats were really old and destroyed my feet. Humor got me through. A Mixed Experience That Made Me Stronger I attended Spectrum Center School of Massage with high hopes. I was already a Reiki Master and came with deep experience in healing work, as well as a strong desire to grow and serve others through massage. What I found was a mixed bag—some real gems, and some serious roadblocks. The Anatomy & Physiology instructor was a light in the darkness. In the first few days of school at Spectrum Center, teachers and even the owner spoke to us—current students—about past students in a negative, gossipy way. That set the tone. As the program went on, I found it hard to get the support I needed, especially when it came to using my own physical injuries as clinical examples that could’ve benefited everyone.
