Houston's Best Record Store – When I proclaim that Sound Exchange is unequivocally the best record store in Houston, I am taking into consideration that not everyone is interested in obtaining the newest addition to their championed vinyl collection(hence the bad reviews you see here). This place is, simply-stated, great for two reasons: Sound Exchange carries an excellent, unrivaled assortment of vinyl records that are candy to the ears(and eyes) of the collector and the vinyl debutante alike, and the CD section of the stor... read more

Citysearch Editorial Reviews – Since 1977 this independent music store has championed underground sounds by maintaining a hefty cache of local artists and refusing to sell major label releases. Located in a charming brick house in Montrose, the shop is “built small to stay small,” fostering an intimate atmosphere that facilitates conversation with the knowledgeable proprietors who love to keep their loyal customer base hip to the psychedelia, punk, folk and soul scenes. Great used records and turntable service! – texas flood said: "Good luck if you're not a scenester" Easy stereotypes are usually a smokescreen for non-substantive writing, texas flood. I find this store a constant source of amazing new music, and the staff very helpful. "Non-scensters" that experience emotional scarring by shopping here probably have deeper problems than finding a good music store. Possibly the only place in town that repairs and carries parts for turntables.

Good luck if you're not a scenester – Very limited selection. I listen to pretty obscure music within the genres they stock and I hadn't heard of anything. Pretty uninterested and unfriendly manager. The vibe I got was "Oh, you don't listen to the Arizona Purple Velcro Sneaker scene? Maybe you should buy your music at wal-mart."
