They are very bad at paying employees. Been on several jobs, where several hundred workers would miss a check, their payroll employee was always reluctant to send paystubs, she also made hundred of thousands of dollars from paying employees who did not work there anymore. They didn't fire her, the owner took over her house and let her continue on doing a terrible job, the owner of the company is very tyrannical, and sees his employees as a mean to an end.
