I worked at Schell more than 20 years ago. I passed the old building on Front and Whittier a while back, and I was really disappointed to see it boarded up. Apparently, they moved after COVID, and I am sure it caused a lot of hard times for the place. I didn't always get along with the owner, but the place was a rare gem. They had a guy who hand-painted backdrops in a scaffolding and all kinds of old theatre props and equipment that you will never see anywhere else. Called to inquire about prop car rental and was quoted $3,750 plus mileage for delivery AND he tells me I have to fly him and the driver to and from!!! That's over $7,000 for a three-week rental of a greased lighting prop. These people are very proud of their stuff -- and clearly think I'm an idiot.
