About this business

Our founder and father, Franz Schattauer, was born in Bremerhaven, Germany in 1909. Bremerhaven is a busy, seaport town, so boats and sailing were natural interests for Franz right from the beginning. His sailmaking career began with a 4-year sailmakers apprenticeship followed by a 10-year journeymanship. He then attended a year of formal schooling in order to learn how to run the business end of a company. Just received my sails from Schattauer Sails, and I am extremely happy. They are the less expensive sails for inshore sailing but still appear to be very well designed and executed. Smoothly finished and lots of attention to detail. Frank was very forgiving of my lack of experience and very easy to work with. At my request, he started out by redesigning the rig from a leg of mutton to a gaff main. This took some consultation between the two of us. Wonderful pair of brothers practicing the beautiful craft of making traditional as well as modern sails. Local business at its best. I found out later that Ballard Sails across the street is quite a bit cheaper but they don't offer as many details on "traditional" sails as Schattauer.
