This basement izakaya can be a challenge to locate-its name is slyly marked on a door that opens to a flight of stairs. Descend to find an unremarkable, brightly lit, and boisterous room tightly packed with wood furnishings and a strong Japanese following. The space may be small but the menu is vast, so bring friends to ensure a fulfilling experience. Their spot-on small plates are designed to be washed down by beer, sake, or distinctly Japanese cocktails like cassis with oolong tea or soda, or a Calpico sour. Be sure to inc... read more

I saw the reviews were very good so I went there but I was very disappointed. Nothing was special. It doesnt worth to try it. Food was okay. The price was cheap but the portion was really small, too. I had to order many foods. When I got the check, I didnt think it was cheap.
Great underground NYC hangout – I went last night w/ a friend and had a great time. Entered about 6pm on a Wed night and there were only 4 seats available. We sat at the bar and enjoyed hot sake and quickly (less than 10 mins) got our orders.... Kimchee, pork dumpling, octopus ball, kobe beef skewers, and a large plate of napa cabbage, bean sprouts, pork belly in miso sauce. It was more than enough to leave us full. Great for sharing and the bill was less than $38 including 2 large carafes of sake!
Highly recommended – Japanese restaurant ... Midtown location ... middle of tourist area. You're thinking high prices and low quality, right? No way! This place is amazingly good and reasonably priced. I have been living here for years and I had never heard of the place until it was featured on Tony Bourdain's show. Just remember, it's not a sushi bar (they don't even sell sushi). It's noisy, crowded, and you will probably have to wait for a table. It's well worth it. Japanese New Yorkers appear to have been keeping this pla... read more
Great food, long line – I really love the food here. It's always one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. However, sometimes the line just is too long. I guess that is a good sign though?
Good and fairly priced food is overshadowed by lazy service and long waits. – Arrived at 6:30pm on a Friday and we had to wait approx 1.5 hours. Wow! You put your name and # on a list and they'll call you. But, I suggest that you hang around the area b/c we got a seat early b/c the party that was ahead of us didn't immediately call back. Food was good except for the grilled yellowtail collar. That was very bland. Wasabi shumai will clear your sinuses very quickly and painfully (the trick is to not breath through your mouth w... read more
Citysearch Editorial Review – After enduring the bustle of Times Square, entering Hagi can feel a little like going down the rabbit hole. The windowless basement space, minimally furnished with TVs and menus on the walls, looks more like an office break room than a restaurant, an impression reinforced by its postwork drinking crowd. But the friendly staff, cheap booze and tasty snacks quickly make the surreal surroundings feel familiar. You may think you know bar food, but unless you've been hanging out in Tokyo's izakayas--... read more
Great Japanese food! – This is my favorite Japanese place in Midtown. The service is great, the food is authentic, the sake selection is wide, and the prices are reasonable. Try the pork belly with daikon, the grilled yellowtail collar, fried oysters, or the yellowtail sushi. The yakitori is great, too! The main problem is that it's too good - and it can be crowded if you show up later than 7:30 - 8:00.
Authentic, no-fuss, fun Japanese among the predictable – I went here with my cousin because we needed something fun and reasonable in midtown, which is no easy task. I remember seeing a show on the Travel channel where they went here with a camera crew and I wanted to eat there ever since. Tons of variety - I had three kinds of yakitori, two kinds of dumplings, broiled fish, riceballs, the works, and it was so much fun to be able to taste so many things! The sake list is also incredible! I can't wait to go back!!! (Just prep... read more
