They are constructing an apartment building in my neighborhood, and the smoke detectors in the new units have been chirping non-stop, 24/7 since July. I asked the superintendent about it, and he was nice enough but basically just said, "we're working on it." Somehow I doubt that — seems like about 20 minutes and a couple Costco packs of 9V batteries should take care of the entire building. Whatever the case, it's a bad look.
