A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK: Pretty straightforward: Arrive at your scheduled time, take calls, assign units, and dispatch calls, leave. WHAT I LEARNED: I hate to say it, but I understand why the so-called "shelf life" of an EMT is only 3 years, why the pay is so low compared to other jobs in the medical field, and why EMS isn't as respected as other professions. They take advantage of people! Charged me $1000 for an 11 mile ride. nothing happened an no services were provided other than a ride. I asked for a breakdown of the charges and they said it $15 per mile and then a base rate of over $1000. If there is an emergency and you or someone else can get you to the hospital don't call an ambulance. I thank the actual paramedics but the company itself only cares about getting as much money out of you that they can.
