We recently had Scott out to clean our HVAC system after noticing an odor when the heat came on. He did a full duct cleaning and coil cleaning, and right away found signs of mildew buildup near a vent in the bathroom. The technician, Lucas, explained how dust and mold can build up over time, and he found some dried leaves in a vent likely from a storm a few years ago. The process was noisy, and he had to move some furniture, but Lucas was respectful. The air smells cleaner, and my allergies aren't as bad, so I'm pleased with how it went.
