A counselor should not engage in gossip, even if it is a small town. Talking about one's experiences without naming names to relate to an individual is one thing, but straight up gossiping about people you both know is not exactly professional. My personal life is nobody else's business, and if I am going to be name dropped in a session by the counselor, at least give me the chance to defend myself.
