It was too windy for the bus tour and it should have been cancelled. The guide did not keep up with the group. Most of the group stayed on the bus waiting on him which was annoying.
My wife and I attended the whooping crane boat ride (Wharf Cat) this year, and the guides, boat staff, and weather were all great! I appreciated all the assistance and positioning the boat surprisingly close to some of the whoopers, which gave us a great experience!
We took the birding bus tour and the whooping crane boat tour. Both had wonderful guides and were very good. The boat tour got us very close to 6 whooping cranes. It was a long boat ride ( approx 1.5 hrs one way), however it has a lower enclosed area, with snacks and bathrooms. Photo was from my phone.
We attended the Whooping Crane festival here in February 2026. It was well organized and offered many fantastic options for birding and otherwise enjoying Port Aransas.
The only difference between South Padre and Mustang Island is the sand was mixed with peppers and a lot of jellyfish, but overall a beautiful place to spend the day
