20 June 2017 Dear Tooele County Commission Tooele County Attorneys Tooele County Recorder Tooele County Clerk: My family lives within a mere 100 yards of what at present is the west entrance to the 175 acre gravel pit proposed by Jay Harwood and others. For the last year we have been outraged, to state it mildly, at the prospect of this insidious gravel pit possibly becoming part of our everyday lives and disrupting the peace and tranquility of our neighborhood and community. If this pit were to happen, there would be major health and safety concerns by the entire South Rim community on a daily basis. Everyone would be adversely affected, no matter where you live in the community, i.e., excessive noise day and night, a continuous flow of bi-directional dump truck and dual side-dump trucks, not only as a safety issue, but ongoing damage to the integrity of Silver Avenue. There would also be non-stop dust flow in the air from pit operations because of our dominant and strong south wind. There is no way the pit could control this! My in-laws live in the beautiful community of East North Salt Lake on the mountains. They love it there, because it’s a place of refuge from the noise, traffic, and pollution-a quiet place for families. Guess who else lives up there…yes, Mr. Jay Harwood. Now, my point is, I would ask Mr. Harwood, that if his plan for a gravel pit in our neighborhood is so worthy in his view and that “…we can be good neighbors…”, as he stated in a commission meeting some months ago, then I would invite him to sell his home in comfortable North Salt Lake and move to South Rim with us. We would welcome him! No...I don’t believe this would happen. I truly applaud Mr. Harwood’s entrepreneurship and his willingness to support the thriving of our free-market system, because these principles are what I believe in strongly myself, however his pursuit of this gravel pit, given its sensitive location, is not only misguided, but indeed morally wrong, and not to mention, illegal, with the latest discovery of these 2001 documents signed by the Hogan family and the county-that the gravel pit MUST BE CLOSED AT THE CONCLUSION of the building of roads and infrastructure for the Benches at South Rim. This agreement, which should have come to light many months age, should be absolutely and immediately enforced and completely overrides any previous arguments and considerations in this matter. Now, I would fervently ask you for your professional consideration and also your empathy. Picture yourself and your families living out here across the street from a 175 acre gravel pit. How would feel about that? How would your children be affected? How would home prices be affected? There are so many reasons to oppose this. Please do the right thing and shut down this idea of the Southside Gravel Pit once and for all, for the sake of what is now approximately 180 families and could very well grow to three or four hundred families in the not too distant future! There are hundreds of people depending on your wise decision and your example. Sincerely, Laun Tischner
