Opera Plaza Cinema

4.2

About this business

There may be a more diplomatic way of saying it, but the fact of the matter is that the four auditoriums in Opera Plaza Cinema are small. Some are very small. On the other hand, some of the art-house films shown here are not shown anywhere else in the city, so it is a matter of seeing them here or renting the video when it comes out. On the up side, the auditoriums are comfortable for the non-claustrophobic, and have both good acoustics and lines of sight. Plus, you do not have to pop your own popcorn.

Editorial Review – Indie and foreign-film fans rely on this four-screener, which often offers a last crack at art-house movies before they leave town.

Small and Simple, but Good Movies – Opera Plaza is a bit on the small side, but I'd rather have smallness, than the ugly largeness of the Metreon theatre. I've gravitated to Opera Plaza because they've played the movies I wanted to see (John Lennon, An Inconvenient Truth, The Puffy Chair) - and I appreciate the alternative selections. The theatre itself is not as plush and attractive as the Embarcadero, but you need to have a theatre like this farther uptown. It's near the Civic Center BART/Muni, which is also appreciated, a... read more

Small and slack – Postage stamp size screens, now in most people's homes as home theaters... Slacko staff, "hey dude I'm just here to do a job..." whatever that is. The restroom was dark as a crypt and had no soap - it is unfortunate that we are forced and reduced to this movie going experience to see an unusual non-mainstream flick that the multiplexes and AMCs won't show. All of this for a $6.75 for a matinee and $9 regular? Give me a break! Try to aviod. These people need to learn. Provide an "experience" and quality/ val... read more

Not the greatest theater but... – Landmark's Opera Plaza Theater is NOT the best theater in San Francisco. Art House Films makes their last stop here before dropping out of the city for good. The downside like everyone has reported is that the screens seems SMALL and the sound is not so hot. As for rudeness, I had no problems nor seen any for the 2 visits I was there.

Tiny and Rude – Theatres and screens are too small, and staff is VERY rude here! Movies showing here are about to be released on DVD in a few weeks anyway, so just avoid this place and wait for the DVD.

Honey I Shrunk the Theatre! – The smallest theatre I've ever seen! I felt like I was in my living room. Terrible set up - but great choices of films - go figure!

Not thee best... – Im normally prefer The Embarcadero but Opera Plaza had the screening of "Notorious C.H.O." so I had to see it B4 it disappeared. Mostly Opera Plaza are indie films or alternative flicks so im not too finicky on sound. Though the chair I was sitting on was not comfortable though...:(

Not impressed. – I love independent movie theaters in general. However, I found this one to be crowded and cramped. Overall, my experience here has not been great, and I try to avoid this specific movie theater.

Absolutely fantastic! – An outstanding atmosphere with a wonderful selection of artsy fartsy movies. I've been there several times. It is located in the same plaza as a wonderful cafe, bookstore, and other nice shops, not to forget, just up the street from the opera house. The very attractive female staff were polite, intelligent and willing to discuss their opinions of movies. The theatres are small, having only enough room for a couple hundred people each. The best place to see foreign films with a romantic date.
