About this business

Couple Nancy and Tim Cushman opened O Ya in Flatiron to serve “omakase,” a rough translation of the French “dégustation,” a chef’s tasting menu. Their highly successful O Ya Restaurant in Boston emboldened the Cushmans to try out a similar concept in New York. Here, you can select from only two tasting menus: one with 18 courses and another with 24 courses! The dishes are a marriage of traditional and new Japanese flavors, Eastern and Western recipes. I have to be honest. It was great food and outstanding service, until I was diagnosed three days later with two bacteria infections (v. cholerae and v. parahaemolyticus) that comes from uncooked or undercooked fish. Given the only fish I had all week was from here, it was clearly O Ya and I won’t be going back. Very disappointing and clearly their process does not eliminate the possibility of this happening. You deal with raw fish, it can’t be eliminated. Please be careful.
