Neiman Foods is responsible for building the first supermarket in Quincy, Ill., in 1940. In 1917, Ferd Niemann Sr. and Steve Niemann opened their first grocery store. By 1930, they had 10 corner grocery stores and a thriving wholesale business. In 1969, the company started to phase out of its wholesale business and began to concentrate on retail.
