The USS KittyHawk CV-63 was docked there when I reported in for my first duty station. Drove from my hometown in Alabama, all the way there by myself, in a stick-shift....not highly recommended doing it the same way. It was pretty cool for a young Alabama country boy, but if we were haze grey and underway for work ops, or west-pac, I spent my time fishing or somewhere far away from the ship and base. Was happy to leave there and go to my next duty, NAS Whiting Field in Fl. Mainly was happy to get outta Cali.
Birthplace of Naval Aviation. Hard working Americans.
They were yelling at me to not take pictures but I took a few anyway outside of the base. I'm not sure why they were tripping out on me but I like the aircraft statues alot.
