At Nantahala River Gem Mine the gemstone material comes from both the local area, and from mines all over the world. Gems and minerals do not all run together. They come from a variety of different mines, wherever that specific gem is found. Many of the mine sites are in remote and not easily accessible locations. A great place to visit with the kids. Buckets are seeded with gemstones from around the world? The local sandy metamorphic schist is fun to sort through to find the gemstones. Beware a 5 gallon bucket of matrix (rocks, gems and sand) is $48.00 plus tax. I had fun sifting thru a scoop of local meta-sedimentary rounded rocks from the adjacent Wesser creek.
Brian was very friendly, and professional! I found just the ruby I wanted! One of the highlights of my day!
This is was our 2nd time here and we will be back. The Guy running it is super helpful and took his time to tell the kids what they got along with tips on how to further clean up the Gem stones. Thank you for being kind and helpful.
