サンフランシスコから車で1時間半で野生のラッコを見られるエリアに行けます。 サンフランシスコから幹線道路を南進して右折すると、右手に砂丘がありこれの向こう側が太平洋ですがそちら側ではなく、左手の湾にラッコがいます。右折してすぐ、ラッコのための横断歩道があるので徐行してください。横断歩道の標識がとても可愛いです。 横断歩道のあたりからすぐにラッコが見られました。2頭がぷかぷか浮いていてとても愛らしかったです。 道路には所々砂が溜まっているところがあり、そこは車がハマってしまうかもしれないので注意してください。 奥には無料の駐車場があります。そこから歩いて太平洋側にも湾側にも歩いていけます。 湾側にはラッコの他にもSea lionや海鳥が見られます。ただ、湾側はあまり近づきすぎないように規制のためのロープが張られていますので、どんなに近くても10mくらい手前からしか見られません。それでも十分ラッコをよく見られることができて楽しいです。 太平洋側は、とにかく波と風が強くて砂も深いため、よほど太平洋を見たい、海岸線を散歩したい、と言う人以外にはお勧めしません。
