Disappointing service and food. Got the blue plate specials as their date night special. Very average food, not a good value. Drinks were fine, but not interesting or elevated despite the price point. We sat for a very long time, arriving before the dinner rush, waiting for our server. Once our food arrived, all three people’s orders were wrong. Server blamed the kitchen. Everything seemed disorganized and mediocre. We wouldn’t revisit.
We visited this restaurant twice, and unfortunately our experiences were very different. On our first visit, the bourbon short ribs and mashed potatoes were very good, and we also enjoyed the fried green tomatoes. The apple crisp dessert, however, was disappointing. Everything was delicious. The food was on point. The staff was friendly and attentive. We happened in on a Wednesday and they were having "Date Night" which was one appetizer, two entrees, and one dessert all for $55. This is a smoking deal. There is a small up-charge for certain dishes (like the bison hangar steak, which I had). Their "southern cuisine" is exceptional. They are creating unique dishes with great flavors. I had a crowd to entertain--14 people on a Saturday night--and I wanted to show off Charlottesville in the best light! So of course we went to Mockingbird. Tonya helped me plan weeks in advance, they let us come early to "dress" the table, and Lynn (or Lin) was standing by to serve us. And the food! We ate short ribs and fried chicken, banana pudding and peach crisp. And don't miss the biscuit basket. All in all, Mockingbird created a memorable night for us! And made C-vill look good. Thank you!
Honestly disappointed by my first time at Mockingbird. The restaurant week menu did not feel worth it. The salad was underdressed, the broccoli on the short ribs was nearly burnt, and the peach crisp tasted more like almonds than anything else. Each on its own would have been alright, but altogether I felt quite let down. I will say the mash potatoes were great.
