A strong foundation can withstand the weight of a multi floored structure. However, if the soil underneath the foundation is not solid, many serious complications may occur. Having a geotechnical survey completed from the outset is very important.

While people had been studying the science of soil mechanics since the 1700s, modern geotechnical engineering got its start in 1925 with the publishing of Erdbaumechanik by Karl Terzaghi. A geologist and engineer, he developed the principle of effective stress, and demonstrated how it related to soil.

For more than 4500 years, humans have found uses for asbestos. As early as 2500 BC, the Finns mixed it with clay to create strong, durable pots and utensils. By 300 BC, the Greeks were using the material to make lamp wicks and other fire-resistant items.
