Camped in Gilbert and took the Mesabi bike shuttle out to Nashwauk and rode our bikes back to camp. If you take the shuttle, ask for Jon - he is a fantastic tour guide and driver. A 60 minute drive turned into a 2 hour adventure where we got an in-depth history of the towns that make up the range as well as various mining tid-bits. Did you know that Greyhound bus line started in Hibbing? We also rode out to the Darwin S Myers Wildlife Area and saw some birds, a beaver dam, and lots of wild flowers. This is an awesome, but very difficult trail. I know your supposed to complete the trail in a stock Rubicon. I wouldn't. Even the easy parts can be difficult.
The Mesabi Trail is a scenic, well-paved path perfect for biking or walking. It winds through charming towns, forests, and lakes, with plenty of spots to stop and explore. A peaceful, beautiful walk/ride for all ages!
Overall is great trail. Went from Virginia to Wahlsten. Wahlsten section is currently not finished. Lots of scenery and variance in the trail. Quite a few hills but not very long or step. Deer flies and mosquitoes are absolutely insane in August!
Sad to see how bad this once great trail has become
