Located to the north of Murphys, Mercer Caverns get their name from Walter. J Mercer, who discovered them on September 1, 1885, during his search for gold. These grottoes were originally known as 'New Calaveras' and were renamed Mercer Caverns in 1946. A tour of the caves take visitors 161 feet (49.07 meters) beneath the earth's surface. Be ready for a descent of 208 steps into the caves and an ascent of 232 out of the caves. Check the website for varying hours of tours.
