4x4 required to drive there. I think that the drive wasn't that bad, but they do a good job scaring you at the visitor center. Beautiful view from the top. Altitude sickness is a potential problem. 3 out of 4 people in our group felt fine. And one started to complain of headache and weakness.
Amazing views above the clouds. The telescopes were so cool make sure you have 4 wheel drive and control you your breathing. Stop at the visitor center for 10 to 20 minutes to get used to the altitude.
The underrated part of getting here is the drive on Saddle Road particularly at night coming from the Kona area. Trust me. People mentioned it is cold. Yes. The drive up to it on the access road ascends quickly. To give you an idea, you go from the 80s on Saddle Road to the high 20s at the visitor center in about 10 minutes or so. Really.
