The Living Desert is nestled amongst the Barrier Ranges and is located 12km from the City of Broken Hill. It is a unique 2400ha reserve which was established in 1992. On top of the highest hill inside the reserve are the 12 sandstone sculptures, created in 1993 by a group of artists from all over the world, which are now one of the top attractions in Outback NSW and a visual representation of Broken Hill's marriage of art & nature. Great views at sunset. Make sure you stay for half an hour after the sun goes down as the colours get even better. The ranger will come and let you know before he locks the gate.
Got charged for a family as couldn't pay fir 2 people. It was very disappointing.
Nice walk up from the lower car park or you can drive right up to the top. Sculptures are interesting but are almost eclipsed by the stunning views from the top. You do have to pay to visit but worth the $10 or $7 for concessions.
The locality is brilliant, the sunset is beautiful but those sculptures, apart from a couple of exceptions, are quite rubbish. The in situ geology is far more interesting.
A must do attraction at Broken Hill. Living Desert State Park is stunning at sunset. Entry is $10 per person (not based per vehicle). There are many walking trails to take advantage of here with wildflower gardens before driving up to the carpark near the sculptures walk. Time it just on sunset for the best photos at to get the iconic sun setting through the hole sculpture shot. Lots of people quietly enjoying the sunset, seeing the solar powered windmills in the distance and cracking open a tinnie! So ironically Australian.... read more
