The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park is home to several animals and plants of the Chihuahuan Desert in their local habitats. A zoo and botanical garden, it is located on U.S. Route 285, Carlsbad, New Mexico at an elevation of 3200 feet (980 meters) on the Ocotillo Hills. Visited the Living Desert State Park in New Mexico, and while it’s still a very nice place to spend a couple of hours, there are a few things to know ahead of time. First off, the new visitor center is absolutely amazing—beautifully updated, interactive, and packed with good info. Honestly, it's a highlight all on its own. Our family loves this local zoo! We've been a few times in different seasons & it's always a fun, active mini adventure to take with the kids. The gift shop has some pretty cool stuff too!
