I took the nature trail at Living Desert on a breezy morning overlooking Carlsbad. Winding through blooming cholla and giant agave on high Chihuahuan desert ridges gave me a whole new appreciation for the biome. The trail is paved and easy on the knees, but the raw panoramic views across the Pecos River Valley are genuinely top notch.
Pretty neat place with interesting facts about the different plant and animal species as well as the natural history of the Chihuahuan desert environment formation. Many of the zoo exhibits such as the bear, wolves, bobcats, mountain lion, and all but 2 of the reptile enclosures in the Nocturnal Exhibit were empty and the Succulents of the World greenhouse was closed. This was a nice outing for my granddaughter and I. Some animals were out a lot were not, but we had fun.
