She is very passionate about her work and was not hiding it. At first I questioned her faith in my ability to change and her conviction that I could have a good life. And slowly I realized that it was not empty feel-good talk. She has a way of reframing things that is quite eye-opening. I could tell that she is very knowledgeable, but she was never like a clinical person, using jargon or acting all removed. She would identify the underlying issue, pulling in stuff at the periphery of my awareness that just opened things up for me, and posing questions that helped me look at myself in a whole new way and inspired me to think about what I want for my life. I came to her when I was at bottom. I had been through lots of counseling but felt all they did was just sit and listen to me be hopeless without much feedback. Dr. Nguyen was incredibly patient and gave me space for my despair, but she also pushed me incredibly hard, confronted me with my self sabotage and passivity. Working with this doctor was a life-changing experience for me. Dr. Nguyen gave me the right combination of validation and challenge to help me question a lot of my behaviors and choices. She has a great understanding of the effects of trauma, but she did not just stop at “talking” and treating my symptoms. She made me examine my whole life structure and helped give me a bird’s eye view of my trajectory in life. And then pushed me do the hard work of changing it.
