A staple of Vietnamese cuisine in Old Oakland, Le Cheval has been serving patrons for over a quarter of a century. Their vast, decorative dining hall is ideal for large gatherings, as is their "Bo 7 Mon" meal, seven courses of beef cooked and served at the table. Le Cheval features an extensive menu, serving specialties in beef, poultry, fish, salad, and rice, along with a full bar. If the menu size seems daunting, there are always favorites to rely on, like the claypot fish or appetizing Imperial Rolls.

Great food, ok service – Have been coming here for 15 years now, and the food has been consistently great. We always get the cube beef steak, which is tender and just on the medium side always. Other dishes I love are Singapore noodles (w/ chicken), claypot prawns, and the mussels. Drinks are funny: the Thai iced tea is kinda an alarming orange color, but good, and so's the Vietnamese coffee. Skip that soursop drink - nothing soursop in it. Could just stick with the pitcher of water they leave at your table, which is really ... read more
Serving boisterous diners family-style Vietnamese dishes in downtown Oakland since 1985. – In Short A raucous dining room holds dozens of tables, many with chatting groups sharing plates of spring rolls, beef or seafood courses, noodles and vegetables or piquant firepot soups. The multipage French-colonial-inspired menu guarantees everyone--adults and children alike--will find something to like. Diners choose from Vietnamese standbys such as lemon-grass chicken, cubed beef steak or the adventurous salty prawns, a favorite of... read more
Good food. Bad waitresses. – When I eat at Le Cheval, I usually order barbecue pork & fried rice. It's delicious & the price is great. The restaurant is attractive, with a bar to have some drinks at if your group hasn't arrived yet. What the restaurant is lacking in is service. The waitresses speak little English, uncomfortably shove your plate in front of you, & never check on your table. That could be embarrassing if you were on a date. I've always eaten here with people I know very well, so it's not as bad. I'll sacrifice... read more
1 Star Horse in a 5 star town – Unfortunately Le Cheval time has come as a long time diner at this restaurant on 7/24/2007 we had dinner there. The calamari salad was awful loaded with a slim green color curry no lemon grass at least that I could see lots of what appeared to be not properly cook calamari but the taste of the onions made it palatable. We also order the beef lemon grass dish alas no lemon grass to be found and again overpowered with a slime green curry. I think they are using a cheaper form of curry powder to ... read more
Excellent food and good prices! – Le Cheval is one of my favorite restaurants! My entire family and all of my friends that I've taken there LOVE Le Cheval. I've read a couple of reviews complaining about the service. I think what they dislike is there are no servers asking you if you're doing okay or need a refill, etc. The food is served quickly all the time. Sometimes within 5 minutes! I'll recommend a few dishes: The snapper in coconut milk, the cube beef pepper steak, and a snapper in clay pot dish.
The place to be in Oakland – If you're looking for a place that's affordable, great for dinner with friends / family, and perfect after a crazy day after work...this is place to go. The food is incredible, and the portions are hefty. It's probably not ideal for a romantic date, but other than that...the definite shining star in Oakland.
A well-oiled machine Some have complained that the service at Le Cheval is bad. Not so--if the servers seem unfriendly, it is only because they are extremely efficient (though I've always found them to be polite as well). The service is extremely fast, and tag-teaming is a way of life. Really, it can be a pleasure to watch.
great bang – for your buck! the food is definitely worth the money here. there's a good selecctiion and ingredients are usually fresh.
Sometimes Hype is Right Le Cheval has enjoyed accolades and hype for quite some time now. If you don't mind waiting for a table and a loud, crowded dining area, you have to try this Vietnamese restaurant. Even though it's not the most authentic, the clay pots, entrees, and specials are culinary delights. They have cheap and very fast lunch combination, perfect for the work week.
Le Cheval has a 4.3 star rating with 1,026 reviews.
