Following your hernia repair surgery, your doctor will review with you any discharge instructions, such as symptoms to look for, warnings that you need to be seen ASAP, and general care instructions. Have someone drive you home, as you’ll be groggy from the anesthesia.

If you’re having surgery and you smoke, inform the surgeon well before the procedure. Not only will supplemental oxygen be needed for a longer period than what a non-smoker requires, smoking also slows the healing process.
